Farm Labor Bill Reintroduced
The Omnibus Farmworker Labor Bill has been reintroduced in the state Senate under a new number. This new bill, S. 7787, is nearly identical to the version of the bill that was voted down by the Agriculture Committee last month. The earliest this new bill can be placed on the agenda in the Labor Committee will be the first week in June.
The bill retains the mandates of overtime pay after 60 hours in a week (down to 55 hours in 2013), lowers the unemployment insurance payroll threshold from $20,00 to $6,250 in a quarter and allows collective bargaining, among other issues. NYFB will continue to strongly oppose this legislation and requests that you contact your Senator to oppose this bill by calling their office and E-Lobbying today!

FDA Seeks Food Safety Input
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is preparing to develop food safety regulations for the production and packing of fresh produce. In advance of writing those regulations the agency is seeking public comment on current practices and information to help develop safety standards. NYFB is advocating a risk-based approach is used to develop regulations rather than a one-size-fits all approach. Onerous traceability requirements for farmers selling direct to consumers are also a great concern.
If you are a producer, NYFB encourages you to send comments to FDA before the May 24 deadline. We have prepared comments that you can personalize to your particular concerns and include details about food safety measures on your farm. Visit our website for instructions on how to send comments.
