Invasive Species book for Qualifying Greens Industry Professionals

In 2007, both Suffolk and Nassau counties passed legislation prohibiting the commercial sale, introduction, and propagation of 63 non-native, invasive plant species on Long Island.  A non-native, invasive plant is one that has been introduced by humans to a location outside its native or natural range and, once established, causes environmental and economic damage by out-competing and displacing native plants and wildlife and disrupting ecosystem processes.  Invasive species are one of the greatest threats to Long Island’s native plants and wildlife and have already caused millions of dollars of damage to our lands and waters.

As a reference, the list of 63 prohibited species is included inside the back cover of the book.  This book also offers a variety of beautiful, hardy, native alternatives to many of the non-native, invasive plants that are degrading our natural habitats.  Native species offer better sources of food and cover for butterflies, birds, and other wildlife.

This book is offered free to qualifying greens industry professionals. If you grow or plant trees, shrubs or other plants as part of your business, please contact LIFB to see if you qualify for your free copy of Native Alternatives to Invasive Plants. Or to purchase individual copies of the book for $8.95, please visit Brooklyn Botanic Garden http://www.bbg.org/ It is listed as book number 185.
