The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Cornell University is pleased to introduce two new agricultural programs: Agricultural Sciences and Enology & Viticulture.
The newly created Agricultural Sciences program will see the first class begin the Fall of 2006. Students who wish to pursue a broad education to prepare for careers in the agricultural and food industries will find Agricultural Sciences to be a great fit. The program’s flexibility allows students to design a curriculum that meets their goals. Students will take courses across several areas including Animal Science, Agribusiness and Farm Management, Communication, Crop & Soil Sciences, Education, Entomology and Plant Sciences. Experiential learning opportunities including research, study tours and internships balance out the curriculum.
With more vineyards and wineries in the United States than ever before, there is a critical shortage of people to manage them. A major reason is that there has been no undergraduate degree program in either grape growing or winemaking in the east. That is, until now. Cornell is filling the void by offering new undergraduate programs in viticulture (grape growing) and enology (winemaking). The viticulture curriculum is a concentration within the plant sciences major; the enology (winemaking) curriculum is a concentration in the food science major. Students apply to either Food Science or Plant Sciences. The first class of students began the Fall of 2005.
"I am majoring in 'vit' simply because I love it. I was bitten by the grape bug while doing a research paper on diseases of grapes for my plant pathology class," said Nova McCune, a senior from Greenville, S.C., who transferred to Cornell last year to major in viticulture. "I decided that I definitely wanted to come to Cornell once the new major was announced." McCune, who worked this summer as the vineyard and winemaker's assistant at Thirsty Owl Wine Co. in Ovid, N.Y., says that she hopes to find a job at a large winemaker after graduation. "In the long run, I hope to one day open my own small vineyard and winery." As part of the program students work in the industry to gain experience.
CALS currently offer students 24 majors to choose from for a complete listing visit www.cals.cornell.edu. Freshman Admission requirements: 4 units of English, 3 units of Science (1 Biology and 1 Chemistry or Physics) and 3 years of Mathematics.
Application deadlines: Early Decision – November 1, 2005 and Regular Decision – January 1, 2006. Questions contact: CALS Admissions 607-255-2036 or als_admissions@cornell.edu
